Yesterday the group had the opportunity to meet with Seattle Police Chief Kathy O'Toole (and her delightful daughter, who was visiting from Boston). Seattleites are already familiar with Chief O'Toole and the positive impact she's had on our city. The kids were able to sit and listen to the chief share her experiences, not only becoming a police officer and lawyer, and how both her Catholic upbringing and her educational and work background brought her to Seattle, but also about her work in Ireland and Northern Ireland. She shared with the group the importance of looking at issues from all sides, of being involved in community, of peace and reconciliation, and simply reminders that we are all in this life together. She answered questions, shared anecdotes, and showed all of us what a strong, compassionate, educated, and civic-minded woman she is.
How lucky we were to have had this opportunity right before we leave!
Tomorrow, we spend the day flying from Seattle to JFK International and then on to Dublin, where we'll arrive on Thursday morning ready to roll.
